Starting Wednesday, Popeyes is permanently introducing chicken wings nationwide in five flavors, including three new variations.
Of the five, Sweet ‘N Spicy Wings debuted in select markets back in August; they're marinated, fried and then tossed with chili, garlic and ginger for a sweet-hot flavor profile. The Miami-based chicken chain has also featured fiery Ghost Pepper Wings as an LTO from time to time.
But with the national launch, three completely new flavors have been developed with varying degrees of kick. Honey BBQ Wings are the mildest, with a tangy tamarind, honey and smoky molasses sauce.
Roasted Garlic Parmesan is also tamer, flavored with caramelized garlic and Parmesan and asiago cheeses to complement the crispy breading. Turning up the heat is the new Signature Hot wing variation. It goes back to the brand’s Louisiana roots; the wings are tossed in signature Cajun hot sauce with a touch of sweetness.
All the wings are hand-breaded and fried, some incorporating the added flavors in the marinade or coating, while others are tossed in the sauce.
“This is something my team has been working on for three years, and we took our time to get it right,” said Amy Alarcon, Popeyes’ VP of Culinary Innovation, in a statement. “Ghost Pepper has become a heavy hitter in our arsenal of products, and in marrying that with our Wings we knew we had something special. Now, we’ve found ways to add flavors on top for a variety of tastes our guests are sure to love. And with our Sweet ‘N Spicy Wings recently becoming the highest performing product since the Chicken Sandwich, we are beyond excited to unveil this full lineup.”
The wings are priced at $5.99 for a six-piece order, but Popeyes is promoting the launch with what it’s calling “DISScount” codes, inviting guests to rethink their chicken wing choices—an obvious stab at rivals KFC and Chick-fil-A.
The codes are promoted with sassy labels like STOPWINGS, NOTTHATWILD, OPENSUNDAY and ONLY1WINGSFLVR. Starting Monday, customers enter a code on the Popeyes app or website to unlock a free six-piece order of wings with a $10 minimum purchase. Popeyes is also placing billboards near competitors’ restaurants to add even more ammunition to the chicken wing battle.
